Finer Details

Financial cost: …$300 US annually to cover hosting charges and development costs

What personnel are needed to bring this resource to fruition, (make the resource available in another language)?

a volunteer adds the translation of 1742 words from English to their mother tongue with recorded voice or video their hand signs using the supplied Android app.

What kind of technical expertise is needed to adapt this resource to your situation?

The volunteer just needs to know simple English to translate the lexicon.

How much time is required to do all the work required to bring the resource to completion?

The process takes about 30 hours, which they can do at their own pace, offline.

What sort of logistical setting is needed? (e.g. quiet space for recording, good Internet access)

The Hearing volunteer needs a quiet place to record saying the words into the Android app volunteers use to add their mother tongue. The Deaf or Child Of Deaf Adult (CODA) needs good diffuse lighting with a dark solid background and solid color clothing for videoing their hand signs. The recording is done offline using the Android app. After they have recorded or videoed a few words I will do a quality check on the voice or hand sign files. The files take up about 1.5GB on their internal phone memory. Once they complete adding their words they need internet to send the files to me. Then they can remove the files from their phone.

How long does it typically take to watch, read or otherwise engage?

It can take watching the quadlingual video dictionary 80 times before mastery of spelling and word/sign recognition. Some may learn much faster. The good news is that the Smart phone will not get tired… it only needs to be recharged.

What challenges or difficulties are there using this resource?

The user of the video literacy curriculums needs to install the Telegram app and adjust their Telegram app settings so the curriculum channel videos store to their external SD if they have one. Once they watch the videos each one time, they will no longer need internet connection to continuepracticing the words.
